Additional Measles Cases Confirmed in Seneca County

Waterloo, NY — The Seneca County Health Department has confirmed (2) two additional cases of measles and two (2) presumed positive cases. The overall risk to the public remains low, particularly for individuals who are fully vaccinated against measles or were born prior to 1957 (and are presumed to have natural immunity). Those most at risk of infection include unvaccinated infants, children, or adults; pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems.

Measles is a vaccine-preventable illness and can result in serious health complications. The virus is very contagious and can spread through coughing and sneezing and can remain alive and infectious in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours after an infected person has left the room. The single best way to prevent measles is to be vaccinated. Individuals are recommended to receive 2 doses of MMR vaccine to be protected.

Key Symptoms to Watch For:
• High fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes
• A red, blotchy rash that typically starts on the face and spreads downward 3 to 5 days after initial symptoms begin

Guidance for Residents:
Check Immunization Records: Ensure you and your family are up to date on the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. Two doses are 97% effective at preventing measles.
Call Ahead Before Seeking Care: If you develop symptoms consistent with measles, stay home and call your healthcare provider, urgent care, or emergency room before arriving. Pre-notifying the facility allows medical staff to implement isolation precautions to protect other patients and staff.

The Seneca County Health Department offers the measles vaccination (MMR), and other vaccinations for county residents who are underinsured or uninsured. Please call (315) 539-1920 to find out if you qualify or visit our website at www.senecacountyhealthny.gov
